Federal register number codes
Information about register numbers assigned by the United States Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Inmates and defendants get assigned a register number by the United States Marshals Service or the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Register numbers are in the following format:
xxxxx-yzz
The first 5 digits are pseudo-randomly assigned (typically if people are assigned numbers on the same day, they will get sequential numbers). Most likely, the district court assigning the numbers has a pre-defined block of numbers they use for that day.
The 3 digit register number suffix tells you the district court that originally processed the defendant into the system.
Once all 5 prefix digits have been used up, the district-based suffix will roll forward by 100. For example, if register numbers 00000-001 through 99999-001 are taken, then they start being assigned as xxxxx-101. The current numbering system allows each district to process in a total of 1,000,000 people.
